Hi
When I absent-mindedly wiped off some water from my night stand with a baby wipe the other night, I noticed that the baby wipe came up quite soiled. I am not sure if the finish is old Fashioned varnish or a modern polyurethane or something similar.
The night stand is not a valuable piece, but I wondered suddenly about other varnished wooden furniture …. baby wipes clearly are for babies… but what do you use for furniture …. are there any ‘furniture wipes’?
Thank you so much
the answers you have are very good, but also try sugar soap or white spirits on a hidden area first ,see how that works. now baby wipes ????????? aren’t they lethal? i would never use them on a baby . everything else o.k cleaning the shower/ shoes/ floors/ carpet stains they are great for .baby’s skin ,no

Don’t use anything you can buy, you will only add to the problem. you need to do the following :
get a clean cloth and a bowl of water that is as hot as you can realistically stand. clean the table in small circles over and over again keeping the water as hot as possible. (don’t burn yourself)
This should sort out your problem and you will see results almost immediately.

*you can get furniture polish on wipes.but for cleaning the polish off have you tried warm water with a drop of vinegar in it.?

best way is to go to your local hss hire shop and hire a small palm or triangle sander, this will take off old varnish and clean up your furniture but you will have to re-varnish it again, but once you did that you will have nearly new furniture again!

I do this for a living: try white vinegar and water. use 1portion of vinegar to 2 parts water.

The coating on your nightstand may not be varnish(old or new) at all it may be furniture wax
Wax is not as hard as varnish and can be susceptible to the additives in baby wipes and could have been dissolved into them.
methylated spirits applied to the surface with fine wire wool will remove wax readily and once cleaned can be re-waxed or varnished
