I need to write a persuasive essay on environmental issues such as farm animals or zoo breeding. Any ideas? (and NOT global warming!) Any links?

Question: How does meat consumption contribute to rainforest depletion?

Answer: The United States imports roughly 200 million pounds of beef from Central America every year. Aside from the fuel used in transport, grazing land is needed for all of these animals. Where does all that land come from in a densely forested region? The answer: from clear-cutting forests and rainforest A Smithsonian study estimates that the necessity for more grazing land means that every minute of every day, a land area equivalent to seven football fields is destroyed in the Amazon basin(1).
For each hamburger that originated from animals raised on rainforest land, approximately 55 square feet of forest have been destroyed. And its not just the rainforest. In the United States, more than 260 million acres of forest have been clear-cut for animal agriculture (2). With increased per capita meat consumption, and an ever growing population, we can only expect to see more deforestation in the future.

Science fair projects are meant to solve problems, not to show how something works. I’d like to do a Science fair project in the category of engineering using my LEGO Mindstorms robotics kit. The judges at the science fair especially like environmental projects, so I want to do an environmental engineering project. An example would be "What alternative energy source is the most efficient: water, wind, or geothermal?" Something like that would be good. If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate to see them.

Put a solar panel on the robot. Use the controller for the robot to make it move around using the suns energy. Say this should be the use of energy for cars, making them run by electricity. If they ask about nighttime, give the example of a glow-in-the-dark magnet. It gathers the energy it needs during the day. uses it at night. Also use the example about the terrible oil spill in the gulf of mexico thats going on right now. Say that would be abolished if we were to use an alternative energy source for our cars and machines, aka the suns energy.Don’t know much about enviormental engineering, but I think this falls into that catagory. Not very original but good examples for it are here.

What schools do you recommend for environmental architecture?

I want to study architecture, environmental engineering, and environmental design. I have a 4.05 cumulative GPA and will be graduating high school in two years. I’m willing- and would prefer to- work very hard and take 18 credited hours or more, while auditing a class or two. I can’t afford to go out of the US unless a full tuition scholarship is available.

Also, what are some ways to get noticed and get scholarships from these schools?

You will not get a full tuition scholarship to study outside the USA.

You need to stop thinking in terms of "environmental" anything. It is the sign of an unemployable tree-hugger.

Environmental Engineering has the most credibility of any study, but even Environmental engineers get little respect from other engineers.

I wanted to know who the Environmental Health Officer for Havering area in the UK is. Does anyone know how to find this out, or perhaps you know who it is and could tell me. I live in Essex, Romford so I am looking for the Environmental Health Officer that covers that area.
A few points I think I should explain to be clearer:

How do genetic variation and environmental factors work together to cause natural selection?

Genetic Variation: a measure of the genetic differences within a population or species.
Environmental Factors: characteristics of an ecosystem that can change and therefore lead to a change in the available food, resources and eventually survival of a species.
Natural Selection: the scientific explanation for how and why species change over time based on the idea that species adapt to their environments in order to survive and reproduce, therefore passing on favorable traits the next generation.

I’ll use an example of humans. We are all the same species – but just looking around you can see genetic variation.

EX 1:
* Variation: Skin tone
Environmental factor: Very sunny area, very little shade cover.
Natural selection: Ignoring sunblock, and clothing’s ability to block sun…humans with lighter skin will be more susceptible to skin cancer, and blistering and other pain associated with sun burns. (All humans in this locality will be likely to be burned, but the lighter skin will have a higher frequency of problems). Due to the pain of the burns and blisters, or even higher rates of death due to skin cancer – the lighter skinned individuals would die with fewer or no offspring, while the darker skinned individuals would live longer to mate. Eventually the community would consist of mostly (or all) dark skinned humans due to natural selection.

EX 2: –Assume no grocery stores, and humans are vegetarians ONLY and they have no tools (no ladders, stilts, etc) and assume humans cannot climb LOL! Also assume that they do not share with other adults. This is totally exaggerated, but this can be applied to something like giraffes…I am only using this for humans because being tall or short is clearly something that you get from your parents. It isn’t random, and it isn’t something that you can "work for" like muscles.

Variation: Tall vs short
Environmental factors: All food is at the top of trees
Natural selection: Shorter adults will starve, because they cannot reach the food.

So basically…organisms (plants, animals, bacteria, etc) that have more traits that are favorable in the environment will live longer and have more opportunities to reproduce and create offspring that share their favorable traits. Organisms with traits unsuitable for the environment will die sooner, and will produce fewer or no offspring. If given enough time in a stable environment, the population will eventually reflect the genes best suited for it, assuming pure natural selection.

Sexual selection is different from natural selection, and sexual selection will just make the prettiest/strongest/etc genes be expressed, not necessarily the best suited for the environment.

I’m planning to double major in history and environmental analysis? Is this a good combination? I hear Environmental analysis is a high paying field, and I want to have a job that pays well while I’m doing something I like.

History wasn’t a job it is for us to know about the past and olden Centuries,Science for Doctors to concultations of the patients,Surguries,Medications,etc,also not related to a job.

I am looking at job ads and came across one for an Environmental service attendant. This is at a long term care facility. The only other information provided is the category non-clinical>service. Serious answers only please.

I would say it is a janitorial position. A lot of companies are coming up with "fancy" titles to entice people to take a job that they might not otherwise consider. For example, the garbage men in my area are called "Sanitation Engineers" and a local company in my area calls their receptionist the "Director of First Impressions"

I know environment is very important & we need to take care of it.
But the matter in the Environmental studies textbooks is quite general & known to almost all the students.
Like anyone can tell what is ecosystem or pollution & what we need to do to protect our environment.
Does the subject needs to be included in the curriculum?
Should it be valued in terms of marks/grades ( coz then the students are more interested in marks) ?
What are better ways to create awareness among students?

Firstly, the content of the EVS books changes slightly as you move on from one class to the next.
Whereas in class 5 you might have read the basic definition of ‘pollution’,in class 11, you study the detailed reactions and in-depth causes of pollution and the scientific names of the pollutants.

Secondly, there is requirement of periodical revising of concepts in EVS,since as you grow up,your understanding increases,aswell as your realisation.

Lastly,if you periodically revise the perturbations that the nature faces, you will somehow be reminded of your duty towards it.

Its true that I also complained of my EVS exams when I was in school,especially when I was in high-school and I had burden of much more ‘heavy’ subjects,like physics,chemistry and maths, I feel that I have changed some of my habits after being influenced by my EVS lessons.

For example, I always turn public taps off when they are not being used, I never throw any rubbish out of the window when I’m in my car,all this because unknowingly, my EVS classes along with other sources taught me that I must protect my environment by modyfing my lifestyle a tiny bit,it doesn’t harm me to do so, you know.

I have to design a board game dealing with environmental Science for my AP class. Help! I have no clue how to start.

Have a path of squares that snakes around the board (like Candyland). Roll a die to go around the board. Have the instructions written in the squares. "Went green – roll again" "Left your lights on all night – back 2 squares" "Draw an EnviroCard" The EnviroCards could have points on them (like Life). The player with the most points wins the game, instead of the first player to finish (like having the most money in Monopoly).

What countries are diffidently non environmental friendly ?

China India and Russia are aggressively non-environment friendly.
They have too many economic problems to deal with to spend
the effort on environmental concerns.
It’s kinda hard to be "diffidently" unfriendly y’know.

Are finding jobs in environmental science more difficult than others? What kinds of jobs will be available to?

I’m thinking about majoring in environmental Science but I’m not entirely sure what jobs are out there and how difficult it is to find a job despite the recession. I’ve read that the general yearly starting salary is around 40,000, and if anyone could confirm this, that’d be great.

environmental science is a good major but i would study environmental engineering.

more pay, able to obtain a professional license.

this degree is harder to get though…but with enough hard work u wll be okay

I need to do a project that deals with the roof, but it has to with environmental science.

Solar panels is definitely one way to go. Not only solar panels, but they now make solar shingles. These shingles replace your regular roof so instead of mounting a big panel on top of your roof, your roof is actually the solar pv collector. Another option is planting a green roof. This means that you actually have dirt and plants on your roof.
