To say that any particular career is superior to another is ridiculous. A firefighter isn’t any more noble than a McDonalds employee. I’ve never needed the assistance of a fireman even once in my life, but I have gotten hungry and went to a McDonalds before. Once you realize there is no “better calling”, you can be content with any task.

Nevermind the fact that public service is an extremely competitive field… And, in a recession, your chances are FAR lower of getting on with a department. Many budget cuts include cities cutting salaries as well as positions. This suggestion was CLEARLY not thought out very well.
